Famous film locations around Kensington and Chelsea

With awards season hotting up, the discussion at GdF HQ hasn’t been so much about who should win Best Director or who will give the worst speech. Instead, the conversation naturally veered towards famous film locations in our patch of London with Tim and Simon having an ‘address-off.’ We think Tim wins with his knowledge of the location of Uncle Monty’s house in Withnail and I.

From Albert Bridge to Kensington Gardens, location scouts seem to love this area of London for its iconic landmarks, pretty streets, prime London properties and green spaces.

Albert Bridge, Chelsea

This ornate bridge with its 4,000 bulbs has been featured in films including Sliding Doors, The 39 Steps, Maybe Baby, Bridget Jones’s baby and A Clockwork Orange.

68 Cadogan Square, Chelsea

When Daniel Craig famously breaks into M’s flat in Skyfall, it’s at Grade II listed 68 Cadogan Square. It’s no coincidence that it’s the former home of composer John Barry who created the music for so many Bond films.

35 Glebe Place, Chelsea

This was the setting for Uncle Monty’s Chelsea townhouse in the timeless cult classic, Withnail and I. West House is a Grade II* listed Queen Anne revival house built in 1868–69 by the architect Philip Webb.

30 Wellington Square, Chelsea

Ian Fleming doesn't specify an exact address in his books, but rather refers to Bond’s home as being located on a ‘little plane-tree’d square off King’s Road.’ According to his friend John Pearson, the most likely location of James Bond’s bachelor pad is 30 Wellington Square.

69 Onslow Gardens, Chelsea

Not one for animal lovers. This is the address in A Fish Called Wanda where Ken tries to kill Mrs Coady but instead, squashes her dog.

King’s Road, Chelsea

Stanley Kubrick was a fan of filming in London, with scenes from A Clockwork Orange set on King’s Road and locating Eyes Wide Shut in London.

Harrods

Harrods is the employer of Mr McGregor in the film version of Peter Rabbit. Much of the action at the end of the film takes place here when Peter and friends travel down to London from the Lake District. Beatrix Potter was also a Knightsbridge resident and Harrods is featured in her diaries.

Kensington Gardens

Scenes with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet in Finding Neverland are filmed in these stunning gardens. Kensington Gardens was originally the western section of Hyde Park, which had been created by Henry VIII in 1536 to use as a hunting ground.

National History Museum, Kensington

Nicole Kidman’s menacing character Millicent Clyde works here as a taxidermist in 2014’s Paddington and Paddington can be seen running along the roof. The Mummy and Lara Croft’s Tomb raider were also filmed here.

23 Egerton Terrace, Knightsbridge

This Georgian mansion is the home of Lindsay Lohan’s character Annie and her mother played by Natasha Richardson in The Parent Trap.

Chelsea & Westminster hospital

The hospital’s entrance has appeared in Jack and Sarah, Eyes Wide Shut and Sliding Doors.
